Day 4 of LL- The souls underneath the wall?...
This humongous wall has always been known for being a protector who kept their country's citizen safe in their embrace. It stood still day and night. From one side, you could see little soldiers guarding at watchtowers like the green army men in Toy Story, and from the other side, there were cozy row of houses down along the side of the wall. And this protector of the “Middle Kingdom” is called the Great Wall of China.
Although the Great Wall of China, , was originally started being built during the Qing Dynasty by Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of Ancient China. To be accurate, smaller walls had been built over the years, but it was not strong enough to keep the northern invaders, the Mongols, away. Therefore, he ordered that a long, long wall made with dirt surrounded by stones had to be built with thousands of lookout towers on it, which would be useful in case of an invasion. However, the wall we see today was mostly built in the Ming Dynasty. That is because during the Ming Dynasty, the wall was rebuilt with bricks and many of the parts constructed at that time had made its way to stay standing till today.
Like I mentioned before, this wall protected the northern border, so the threatening Mongols won’t have the opportunity to have a successful invasion. It also has over a thousand watch out towers, beacon towers, and blockhouses. Beacon tower was a very clever way to send signals and messages across long distances using fire and smoke. Its purpose was the same as how wolf manure was burned to create smoke to inform others can be prepared, but why did it have to wolf manure? π€
It’s because the smoke wouldn’t dissipate quickly, so it would still be seen from a distance away. Blockhouses gave the soldiers a shelter, which in the process, would save the time spent from going from their homes to their workplace. The troops also lived in the towns along the wall, so they can quickly defend their kingdom in case of a large attack.

π₯Mindblownnn. Clever.π₯ |
Peasants, criminals, slaves and people who had to be punished was forced to help build the wall. It was estimated that millions of worker was used and one million workers died on the job! Soldiers not only helped with the construction, but they also managed the workers and guarded the wall. Now the question is, why did people say there are souls underneath the wall? That’s because workers who died didn’t get properly buried. They were just thrown and buried at the bottom of the wall. This is actually really cruel.
It had made its way to become one of the new seven wonders of the world based on online voting. It is the longest man made structure in the world, so I think it deserves the title of being in the new seven wonders of the world!
