London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down. London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady.🎵~

Many of us grown up being fairly familiar with the nursery rhyme “London Bridge is falling down”. I remember singing these type of children songs when I was a kindergartner in elementary. It's fun to sing and the melody is also easy to memorize too! Not only that, but it's about one of the world's most famous landmark. This landmark that we sang about numerous times as a kid is the London Bridge.

I would usually only sing the first verse and stop there, but if you remember all the lyrics then you would know that many different building material are mentioned throughout the song. Why is that? The first London bridge was believed to be built by the Romans during the first century, but over the years, it has been rebuilt many times. These bridges later each got taken down either from disasters or having the need to be replaced for a new purpose. It got rebuilt with different materials mentioned in the nursery rhyme each time. First with wood and clay, then bricks and mortar, and at last, with stones.

Image result for fireWhen was the first stone bridge built? It was built in 1176 by Peter de Colechurch. Peter de Colechurch was a priest and a chaplain of St. Mary’s Colechurch. He started off by build constructing the foundation and replacing one of the bridges built during the early middle ages. He participated in the construction until his death in 1205. Because if that, several other London citizens finished the stone arch bridge after 33 years. It had 19 pointed arches. Each was about 7 meters which is 24 feet. At that time, the bridge brought together various businessmen and became a great place to live or to open up a shop. Various stores and houses surrounded the bridge and made everything more lively.

Several years later, a great fire occurred. It burnt down the buildings and killed over 3,000 citizens, but it didn't take long before they were rebuilt again. However, it continuously needed to be repaired and upgraded, so the city decided to build a separate bridge just a few yards upstream. That project was given to John Rennie to work on.

Once again, it didn't last over 140 years. It eventually got shipped to the United States of America at Arizona to attract tourists to the Lake Havasu City's resort town.

*PS, some people find the lyrics unamusing after singing it a million times, so they would sing London Drugs is closing down instead. Just to make it different! (Not actually hoping London Drugs will close down though. 😂)

Now that I know why the song always say the structure is falling down, the lyrics actually make sense.😆

And that's it for today! See you next time!🌉
